(ISE) announced the award of a contract from MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (MDA). ISE will provide two commercial off-the-shelf, high speed Aurora Towfish, which will be used to support mine detection missions and route survey operations for the Royal Canadian Navy’s Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels. The Aurora towfish will include modifications to integrate new sensors and navigation equipment, including an L3 Klein sidescan sonar, and an R2Sonic bathymetric multibeam echosounder. The modular design of the vehicle makes it a simple matter to exchange sonar payloads. The Aurora towfish has been proven as a viable component of the Royal Canadian Navy’s Route Survey system. In conjunction with the Dorado Semi-submersible Technical Demonstrator, Aurora has been used in many sea operations and evaluations since 1999. Further capabilities of Aurora were demonstrated during an evaluation in Esquimalt January 2008. There, Aurora was integrated and tested with the HMCS WhiteHorse Route Survey System Payload. Trials in Saanich Inlet, and approaches to Esquimalt Harbour demonstrated Aurora’s capability to deploy various sonar modules in operational survey conditions. The towfish is active in the sense that it can maintain horizontal position and depth as well as avoid obstacles. Each towfish possesses its own controller. Earlier towfish have been fitted to variants of the DORADO Remote Minehunting System (RMS) for more than a decade.ISE was formed in 1974 to design and build underwater vehicles. Based just outside Vancouver, Canada, ISE has delivered 240 vehicles and over 400 robotic manipulators to more than 20 countries around the world. The ISE family of vehicles includes AUVs, ROVs, submersibles, semi-submersibles, and active towfish. ISE also has a robotics capability, having built underwater manipulators for a variety of functions and land based robotic systems for various applications ranging from intervention in hazardous environments, automated refueling and the robotic manipulator training systems for space.[mappress]Naval Today Staff, February 14, 2013; Image: ISE View post tag: Navy Share this articlelast_img read more

Moon Hooch Drops Gritty, NYC-Centric Music Video For “Rough Sex”

first_imgThe innovative horn-and-drum trio that is Moon Hooch has just released a brand-new music video for their song “Rough Sex” off the album Red Sky. The Brooklyn-based band has made waves with its unique and groovy take on electronic dance music, consistently blowing minds with their new and ingenious ways of playing their instruments. The band is always a pleasure to see live, with their bold mix of jazz, funk, and rock over a pounding beat guaranteed to get folks dancing and their unique, inventive playing guaranteed to captivate (and sometimes, confuse—I’m looking at you, traffic cone, and how you make the sounds that you do). While the band has become a beloved institution of the festival circuit and beyond, in their early years, the trio was known for the legendary dance parties that they would spontaneously throw in the subways of New York City, which eventually earned them a ban from the Bedford Ave L train stop in Brooklyn by the NYPD. The new video for “Rough Sex” riffs on the group’s humble origins, showing how the band has risen out of the subways and to the rooftops of NYC, where even the NYPD cannot shut them down.As saxophonist Mike Wilbur explained in a press release, “Our performances really take on a life of their own and we feed off of a shared energy with our audience every night.  This video shows that energy and the unstoppable force that it is.”You can check out Moon Hooch’s brand-new video for “Rough Sex” below, which was directed by Lucas McGowen. To see Moon Hooch in action, you can catch them on the road, as the band just kicked off the second leg of their North American tour. But to get there, one girls’ team may have to knock off the other’s team. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Female pitcher Mo’Ne Davis led her team into the Little League World Series, throwing a three-hitter Sunday to lead Taney Youth Baseball Association Little League of Philadelphia to an 8-0 victory over a squad from Delaware.Mo’Ne struck out six in the six-inning game in the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship game. The 13-year-old will become only the 17th girl to play in the Little League World Series in 68 years. It starts Thursday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It was her second win over Delaware-Newark National Little League in the regional. (AP Photo/The Philadelphia Inquirer, Michael Bryant)Clutch has the story:Davis is an honor roll 8th grader and has played for a travel baseball team since she was 7. In a climate that pressures girls to switch over to softball teams before they become teenagers, Davis has held strong and shown her teammates that baseball is the only game for her. It’s often mistakenly assumed that softball is essentially the same as baseball, and while softball has plenty of merits (including its own Little League World Series), the two sports are hardly identical.Girls who love baseball rarely have female leagues to join and often have to fight their way onto all-male teams. Even after being allowed to play, these young women may frequently have to justify their presence on the team.Davis and March stand as awesome public proof that girls can play right alongside the boys — and excel at it. While it’s not fair that Davis carries the pressure of representing all young women in baseball, a lot of sports fans seem to see her that way. The good news is that she’s an awesome role model and totally cut out for the job.Hopefully, in a more equal future, a token trailblazing female on a sports team won’t be the big news that it is today. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, it might be worth switching on ESPN to see these two ladies take the field this weekend!
