Donegal companies warned about invoice frauds

first_imgGardai are warning Donegal companies of the continuing existence of Invoice Redirect Fraud and CEO Fraud saying everyone should treat any request to change bank account details with extreme caution. In recent weeks there has been a noticeable increase in this type of crime, according to Donegal. And some local companies have been targeted. Criminals have succeeded in defrauding companies for very substantial amount of money:• one company lost over €200,000• another lost almost $500,000• many people/ businesses have lost smaller amounts of moneyThe crimes works as criminals send emails to businesses/individuals purporting to be one of their legitimate suppliers. These emails contain a request to change the bank account details that the business has for a legitimate supplier, to bank accounts controlled by the criminals. These requests can also come by way of letter or phone call so caution should attach to any request of this nature. The criminal intention is that when the legitimate supplier next sends an invoice to the company seeking payment for services rendered or goods supplied, the victim business acts on the new banking instructions and sends the payment to the criminal’s bank account where the funds are quickly transferred or withdrawn. In many instances the business does not know it is a victim of this crime until sometime later when the legitimate supplier sends a reminder invoice for payment.Detective Chief Superintendent Pat Lordan, of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau had the following advice for business.“Victims of Invoice Redirect Fraud range from very small businesses to large companies and the consequences of falling for a scam of this nature can be catastrophic and result in the closure of businesses and redundancies. If you are not sure pick up the phone and speak to someone in the invoicing company.’Here is some advice from a Businessman who was recently the victim of this type of scam and lost a significant amount of money: • Trust no email full stop. Incoming and Outgoing Mails can be blocked or redirected without you being aware. Assume all emails incoming and outgoing in your company are always being read by Fraudsters for extended periods of time and that those responsible for payments within your company are a special target for Hackers and their email history is being monitored.• Check all incoming email addresses- that they are correct and coming from a trusted source, its important also to check other emails addresses copied on the mail chain, in order to check that they are also genuine. The Hackers by blocking others on the mail chain isolates the individual making the payment-thus removing any other stakeholder from questioning the payment process. Simple changes such as swopping, adding or deleting letters in a mail address are commonly used to fool you into thinking it’s coming from a genuine source.• Change Requests are a Red Letter Warning. Be especially vigilant for any requested changes of bank payment details, for example, amounts to be paid, account number, name of bank etc.• Always pick up the Phone to your Supplier/Vendor to verbally confirm the change request details.Donegal companies warned about invoice frauds was last modified: November 11th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:donegalfraudGardaiinvoicesonlinelast_img read more

Wet Cave with Fossils Found in Dry Desert

first_imgThe Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest places on earth – it gets about 1mm of rainfall per year, if that – but scientists just discovered a wet cave there.  Robert Roy Britt reported for Live Science that these desert caves can contain water, and at least one is loaded with fossils – indicating a moist climate for the region in the past.    The discovery was totally unexpected, the article says.  There is even evidence of prehistoric human activity.  Hundreds of thousands of bones in one of the Atacama caves, mixed with tree branches, were found eroding out of cave walls.  The article contains a link to a photograph of ungulate bones seemingly jammed together in the wall in a haphazard manner.  Ungulates (grazing animals that chew the cud) must have enjoyed a wealth of grass here at one time.    The team led by J. Judson Wynne of the SETI Institute was exploring the desert for caves that might resemble those on Mars, in hopes of finding likely places to look for life.  Mars is still a question, but there was apparently plenty of life at this location in the past.  The team is seeking to determine whether the bones were “dumped into the cave by prehistoric people or if perhaps they were trapped by a flood.”  One of the team members was “marveling over the extent of this deposition as well as discussing what could have possibly led to the deposition of these bones.”  Readers may want to follow the adventures of the expedition on Wynne’s blog.    Speaking of caves, another amazing underground feature has been exciting cavers since its discovery in New Mexico in 2001.  A large passageway in old Fort Stanton Cave sports a river of crystal running for over four miles – the longest known cave formation in the world.  See Live Science for the story.  Named the Snowy River by its discoverers, it is unique and beautiful.  They still have not determined how far it goes.  The Bureau of Land Management tells about its discovery and has a photo gallery of the river and the cave.  In a return trip last year, cavers were surprised to find water flowing over the crystal.  It had been dry on previous surveys.  Apparently new layers of calcite are deposited each time the underground river periodically flows. What a planet we live on.  There are still phenomenal discoveries to be made.  Imagine hundreds of thousands of fossils and tree branches buried in one of the driest places on earth.  What does that suggest?(Visited 10 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

SA banks outperform global peers

first_img As part of its report, PricewaterhouseCoopers looked at South Africa as a gateway to the rest of Africa. “As growth and investment in Africa continue to accelerate, South Africa offers a portal through which companies from Asia, South America and the Middle East can tap into opportunities across the continent and African companies can reach out to other parts of SAAAME (South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East),” the report said. “With growth of more than 5% a year over the past decade, a population of over 800-million and total purchasing power over US$1.9-trillion, Africa is emerging as one of the most attractive frontiers for growth.” South Africa’s financial institutions, in particular, offer a gateway, as the country’s banking sector accounts for more than 40% of Africa’s assets and the insurance sector comprises more than 70% of the continent’s premiums. This allows these institutions to provide trade finance and support for companies looking to invest in Africa, the report said. SAinfo reporter This performance came against the backdrop of the global economic crisis and financial instability. “While there are some headwinds in the domestic economy and significant uncertainties from Europe, [South Africa’s] banks continue to demonstrate that they have the capability to manage and adapt,” the report said. To build on this success, the report said it is necessary to respond to changes in customer expectations; this includes harnessing technology for customer convenience and improving operational efficiencies. 21 September 2012 South Africa’s four major banks – Absa, FirstRand, Nedbank and Standard Bank – outperformed their Western global peers in several key areas, including return on equity, in the first half of 2012, professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers said in a report released on Wednesday. Combined headline earnings of R21.3-billion and an average return on equity (RoE) of 15.9% saw the country’s banks beat a benchmark group of their Western counterparts, who recorded an average RoE of 2.1% for United States commercial banks and 14.7% for Canadian banks. “This was a commendable performance by South African banks in a relative sense, and a very strong performance compared to the Western world,” PricewaterhouseCoopers said in its analysis report covering the first six months of 2012. “Even more interesting is the composition of earnings for local banks when compared with other countries, which demonstrate that our banks have an enviable net interest income, non-interest revenue mix and continue to operate at favourable efficiency ratios.” Gateway to Africalast_img read more

Take a look back at the year in connected health for 2016

first_imgHow Myia Health’s Partnership with Mercy Virtua… Related Posts Internet of Things Makes it Easier to Steal You… Follow the Puck Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces AI and Deep learning is in progresscenter_img Tags:#AI#App Store#Apple#Apple Store#AR#Data analytics#data security#Deep Mind#diabetes#hacking#healh app#health wearables#mental health#mydario#Theranos#VR#wearables Every day, there seems to be another advancement in medicine or medical research. While medical treatments increase the longevity and quality of life, the way that health is monitored is changing. The increasing popularity of wearable devices and health apps enables people to get greater insight into their health than ever before as wearable devices can track sleep duration and quality, calorie intake, acceleration, frequency, duration, intensity and patterns of movement and health markers such as heart rate and blood pressure.IoT technology, in particular, is playing a huge part in not only what medical treatment is delivered but how. Telemedicine means that people can be treated for a range of conditions in their home instead of visiting doctors or hospital stays.  It’s foreseeable to envision a future where people can 3D print their own tablets at home through their home 3D printer. Sensor technology will be able to detect when medications are running low and reorder replacements. Medical tests will be done at home and the result delivered either instantly through blood and saliva testing connected to the mobile phone or delivery of samples via robot, drone or self-driving car. But we’re not quite there yet. However, 2016 has been a momentous year for health tech, across a range of fields, let’s take a look:World’s first surgery in VRIn April the world’s first operation was streamed live in 360-degree video, enabling medical students, trainee surgeons and curious members of the public to immerse themselves in the removal of a cancerous growth from the bowel in real time via the Medical Realities website. (A one-minute delay was incorporated into the broadcast in case of any complications in the surgery.) Such technology is a powerful training tool for future surgeons, and it will be interesting to see how by extension, AR is used in both medical training and procedures.Wearables’ role medical diagnosis continuesWhile fitness wearables suffer from the phenomenon of drop off after initial bursts of consumer enthusiasm post purchase, their use in medical diagnosis and monitoring continues to grow, particularly regarding the use of wearables to manage such ailments as diabetes and chronic pain.  We’re slowly starting to see mental health being managed through wearable tech including Cognitive Kit, a software platform built into the Apple Watch and Microsoft Band 2 that enables the patient to express their mood with the aim to improve memory and social attentiveness.  We also see wearables in medical trials for the management of health conditions like cancer and diabetes.Testing through IoT technologyOne wearable company invested in the management of food allergies is the Allergy Amulet, a small, elegantly designed wearable that looks like jewelry and contains testing strips that enable you to test your food for allergens in seconds. The device is used with disposable testing strips that, when inserted into food, can detect the presence of allergen proteins in as little as 1-2 parts per million. In a similar vein Israeli company MyDario have created the world’s first all in one glucose meter enabling people living with diabetes to test their blood glucose levels in seconds, directly onto their smartphone. A corresponding app can share this information with medical professionals and family members and also helps track carb intake and exercise.  The device has been rolled out across a range of countries in 2016 including the US, Australia, and India.Perhaps the most notorious medical testing of 2016 centered around the work of Theranos who claimed to have developed a blood-testing device named Edison that would use a few drops of blood obtained via a finger-stick, rather than vials of blood obtained through traditional venipuncture utilizing microfluidics technology. However, they are under investigation currently for misleading lab results and business practices, and the actual efficacy of the testing is yet to be determined. It’s unlikely the product will ever come to light. Founder Elizabeth Homes is now working on a new product, a tabletop laboratory for blood testing on the go. Health app regulation increasesIn September Apple released updated App Store Review Guidelines, that hold greater scrutiny of health and wellbeing apps with a range of stipulations designed to hold developers accountable for health claims of their app. These include:If your app provides inaccurate data or information that could be used to diagnose or treat patients, your app will get increased scrutiny.Drug dosage calculating apps have to come from the drug manufacturer, a hospital, university, health insurance company, or other approved entity. This means individual developers can not make a medical app with drug dosages by themselves (Apple has been enforcing this for the past year already). Recently, the AI research branch of the search giant, Google, launched its Google Deepmind Health project, which is used to mine the data of medical records to provide better and faster health services. The project is in its initial phase, and at present they are cooperating with the Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to improve eye treatment.IBM Watson launched its unique program for oncologists designed to provide clinicians with evidence-based treatment options. Watson for Oncology has an advanced ability to analyze the meaning and context of structured and unstructured data in clinical notes and reports that may be critical to selecting a treatment pathway. Then by combining attributes from the patient’s file with clinical expertise, external research, and data, the program identifies potential treatment plans for a patient. The risk of hacking and data theftThe ever-persistent threat of hacking and data insecurity has persisted through 2016. In October  Johnson & Johnson released information to patients that they had learned of a security vulnerability in one of its insulin pumps that a hacker could exploit to overdose diabetic patients with insulin.Medical device experts said they believe it was the first time a manufacturer had issued such a warning to patients about a cyber vulnerability, a hot topic in the industry following earlier revelations this year about possible bugs in pacemakers and defibrillators. The transition into the era of electronic health records and health wearables has resulted in a plethora of electronic patient information including dates of birth, home addresses, social security records, insurance details and medical data. This data is highly desirable on the black market. Accenture released a report in 2016 revealing that nearly 1.6 million people had their medical information stolen from healthcare providers, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights. Accenture predicts that more than 25 million people—or approximately one in 13 patients—will have their medical and personal information stolen from their healthcare provider’s digitized records between 2015 and 2019.There’s not a simple solution. It requires consumer understanding of the need to secure their health data and the need for health data companies to employ advanced data analytics to preempt data breaches. As our physical selves continue become increasingly quantified in 2017, we’ll need to be on the look out as to how our health information is secured. Cate Lawrencelast_img read more
